John Gibson

My name is John Gibson, I’ve been an avid fisherman my whole life, where I grew up fishing the waters of southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia. I started fly fishing as a student of Mike Smith who runs New River Fly Fishing, and also working with guides with the Taos Fly Shop out of Taos, New Mexico. I pride myself on being a very balanced fly fisherman, whether that be dry fly fishing, euro and indicator nymphing, or streamer fishing, I can help you maximize the time on the water by showing you which techniques are best applied to the current situation at hand.

I started SWVFF because I have a deep love for the sport and the area. There are no other fly fishing guide services that cater to southern West Virginia and more specifically Elkhorn Creek— which is world-renowned for its secluded and pristine trout streams. Whether your goal is to catch native brook trout, catch the infamous big brown trout that this area offers, or just improve your skills as a fly fisherman, I can help you from beginners all the way to experts.
